NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.
This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Bible Studies For Life curriculum.
Bible Passages: Luke 1:11-20, 63-65
Discussion Question: When have you said, “I’ll believe it when I see it”?
Food for Thought:
“How can I know this?” Seems like a logical question, one that we ask all of the time. However, the context of the question in this passage is unique. The angel Gabriel, sent from heaven with a message from God, speaks to Zechariah. His announcement is “You will have a son,” the answer to a prayer prayed a long time ago. Zechariah can’t seem to get his head around this so he asks, “How can I know this?” Gabriel’s response to Zechariah is, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to you to tell you this good news.” Now it seems to me that if an angel shows up and tells me anything, the last thing I’m going to say is, “How can I know this,” but I don’t know that for sure since an angel has never been sent from God to deliver a message to me, not as far as I know.
This week’s session is part of a six-week study called “Beauty from Ashes.” This session is titled “Redeemed from Crippling Doubt” and we focus on one key point: God’s Word can be fully trusted. When God reveals Himself to us, we can trust Him. Zechariah from all accounts was a righteous man (Luke 1:6) who served God faithfully and lived his life according to the teachings of God’s commands. But what happens when God speaks; how does Zechariah respond in that moment? The same can be asked of us: what happens when God speaks; how do we respond in that moment?
