SBC of Virginia hosts statewide evangelism meetings via Zoom

GLEN ALLEN, Va. (BP) -- The SBC of Virginia hosted a series of statewide zoom calls about evangelism during a pandemic, including a call featuring Johnny Hunt of the North American Mission Board on Thursday (June 18). Hunt, senior vice president for evangelism and pastoral leadership at NAMB, spoke to more than 80 church leaders about the necessity of evangelism even during this time of social distancing. Hunt emphasized themes such as sharing personal testimonies and pastors emulating the type of missional living they would like to see from their congregations.

Football, faith center stage at student events

LEXINGTON, Tenn. (BP) -- Tommy Bowden, former college football coach at Clemson University, recently spoke to hundreds of Tennessee high school football students about the importance of making good decisions in life. Bowden said he wanted to emphasize for the more than 700 players, representing more than five counties and 12 schools, the importance of having the right priorities in life by putting God first. The event was held at First Baptist Church of Lexington, Tenn., on July 18.

Jury rules Katy Perry copied Christian rap song

NASHVILLE (BP) -- A jury unanimously ruled on Monday (July 29) that Katy Perry's 2013 hit song "Dark Horse" improperly copied from a 2009 Christian rap song from a musical artist known as "Flame," according to media reports. The case -- originally filed in 2014 by rapper Marcus Gray (under the stage name 'Flame') and his two co-authors -- involves the song titled "Joyful Noise," which was released in 2009, according to Associated Press. The song also features a verse by Christian rap artist Lecrae. Flame is a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary's undergraduate Boyce College and also took classes at the seminary, according to a Baptist Press report.
