Bible Study: Sunday, June 2, 2013

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Bible Passage: Job 1:1—2:13

Discussion Questions: How would you respond if you knew you were brought to Satan’s attention by God? Would you be flattered or afraid?

Food for Thought:

John has been the weather anchor for a local television station for years, so everyone knows him. That is good and bad. As soon as someone recognizes him, they either ask for the weekend weather forecast or remind him of a recent forecast miss. A few local restaurants make it easy on him by sitting him in a secluded section and assigning him a specific waiter with instructions not to ask him about the weather.

Most of us want to live without extra attention, going unnoticed when we shop or take our family out for a quick burger. That would especially be true if the people we encountered wanted to highlight our mistakes. We want to be outside the radar of “those people.” In Job 1:8, we find God putting Job on Satan’s radar. It was a compliment to Job. God knew Job’s motives and that he could be trusted. That same commendation was a challenge to Satan. In a way, God challenged Satan to find a weakness in Job’s faith. God knew Job would pass the test, but that meant there would still be a test.

Even though we may not want to be tested to the extremes Job faced, we must realize that the test of our faithfulness to God can be a compliment. Why would God put us on display if He would not be honored in the process? When we face tests of faith like the one faced by Job, we have the opportunity to grow in our understanding of God while bringing Him honor through our faithfulness.
