Evangelize 91 counties, Kan.-Neb. Baptists urged

PRATT, Kan. (BP) — Start new ministries in 91 area counties that have no Gospel witness, attendees of the 2018 Kansas Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists (KNCSB) were urged.

The meeting was held Oct. 8-9 at First Southern Baptist Church in Pratt, Kan., with the theme “Leading through Change,” based on Joshua 1-3.

KNCSB Executive Director Bob Mills told of counties that don’t have a Southern Baptist witness — 31 counties in Kansas and 60 in Nebraska. Many of these counties have no evangelical witness at all, Mills noted.

Start “places of light” such as Bible studies in the areas, Mills challenged attendees, as populations are too small in some areas to support a traditional church.

The meeting drew 254 messengers and 74 registered visitors.

Messengers approved a 2019 KNCSB budget of $4,745,064, marking a 7.6 percent increase over the 2018 budget of $4,409,916.

KNCSB will increase giving to the national Cooperative Program by half a percent of anticipated receipts of $2,904,000, raising giving to 29 percent of receipts for the Southern Baptist Convention’s national and international missions and ministries.

The 2018 officers, all residents of Kansas, were reelected to another term. They are: president Derrick Lynch, pastor of Blue Valley Baptist Church in Overland Park; vice president Voyt Lynn, pastor of First Baptist Church in Douglass; recording secretary Bryan Jones, pastor of Tyler Road Southern Baptist Church in Wichita; assistant recording secretary Susan Pederson, a member of Prairie Hills Baptist Church in Augusta; and historian Tony Mattia, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Wamego.

Bob and Marie Clark were recognized for their nine years of service as estate-planning consultants for the Kansas-Nebraska Southern Baptist Foundation. They will retire at the end of the year.

The 2019 KNCSB annual meeting is scheduled Oct. 14-15 at Parkview Baptist Church in Lexington, Neb.
