Prayers are being offered for the church community of First Corinthian Baptist Church after a tragic bus accident that took the lives of two members.

FRANKFORT, Ky. – A tragic bus crash involving a local church claimed a husband and wife and left another person in critical condition Sunday morning.

According to the Frankfort Police Department, officers responded to what they described as “a major motor vehicle collision” around 11 a.m. The single-vehicle crash occurred on Georgetown Road at the intersection with Seminole Trail. Three were aboard the van.

Names of the deceased were released Monday morning.

The two passengers, who were husband and wife, were killed and the driver was taken to the Frankfort Regional Medical Center, according to state police. One of the passengers, 76-year-old Carolyn Jackson, of Franklin County, was ejected from the van and pronounced dead at the scene. The other passenger, 81-year-old James Jackson, of Franklin County, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

According to authorities who investigated the scene, the 2007 Ford van was traveling west on East Main Street when it struck a telephone pole near Butler Drive. Eyewitnesses said the van flipped upon striking the pole.

Terrones Mitchell, who was driving the van, was also taken to the hospital where he was admitted for his injuries. The extent of his injuries was unclear.

The bus belonged to First Corinthian Baptist Church, located on Murray Street near the State Capitol. The congregation is affiliated with the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Rev. Leslie Wayne Whitlock serves as the church’s pastor.

First Corinthian is a part of the Franklin Baptist Association, which asked for prayer for the church community and the pastor in a social media post.

“Franklin Baptist, please be praying for 1st Corinthian Baptist Church. Their church bus was involved in a traffic accident today, resulting in some deaths, and injuries. Pray for the comfort, guidance, and leading of the Holy Spirit. Pray for the families involved, and pray for Pastor Whitlock as he ministers to a grieving congregation.

“Our hearts go out to them. As an association and brothers and sister in Christ, we are family. “If one member suffers, all suffer together. If one member is honored, all rejoice together.” – 1 Corinthians 12:26.
