NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP) — So, you want to be a Christian writer?
Well, you can no longer use lack of training opportunities as an excuse.
LifeWay Christian Resources is sponsoring two conferences for aspiring writers — the Southern Baptist Writers Workshop Aug. 3-6 at LifeWay’s Church Program Training Center in downtown Nashville, Tenn.; and the Glorieta Christian Writers Conference, Nov. 10-14, at the LifeWay-owned and -operated Glorieta (N.M.) Conference Center.
More than 30 experienced writers and editors will be leading sessions at the Southern Baptist Writers Workshop. Among them: Jon Walker, editor, Home Life magazine; Selma Wilson, director LifeWay’s discipleship and family magazine department; Linda Lawson, director, communications department, LifeWay; Bob Dean, one of Southern Baptists’ most prolific curriculum writers, Hendersonville, Tenn.; and Judy Bates, a Birmingham, Ala.,-based freelance writer and photographer.
Session titles will include: “Getting Started as a Christian Writer,” “How to Conduct a Good Interview,” “News and Feature Writing,” “Writing Opportunities in LifeWay Publications,” “How to Write for Magazines” and many others.
Participants also will have opportunities for interaction with LifeWay curriculum and magazine editors and to share writing samples and have them evaluated by experienced editors.

“Write with Confidence and Courage” is the theme of the Glorieta Christian Writers Conference. Keynote speaker will be Jack Cavanaugh, award-winning author of the American Family Portrait novels. Sessions leaders include Ken Wales, executive producer of the award-winning television series, “Christy;” Holly Miller, award-winning author of 12 books and travel editor for The Saturday Evening Post; T. Davis Bunn, author of national best-sellers such as “The Quilt” and “Tomorrow’s Dream;” Cecil Murphey, author of 66 published books including his most recent title, “Invading the Privacy of God;” and William Watkins, a Gold Medallion-winning writer and senior acquisitions editor with Broadman & Holman Publishers.
Participants will have opportunities to meet with book and magazine editors from Moody Magazine, Focus on the Family, Zondervan, Discipleship Journal and other publishers. They can also choose from 42 workshops focusing on topics such as writing for children, writing Bible study curriculum, writing drama, negotiating book contracts and writing book proposals.
Additional special features include corporate worship, a writers’ contest, critique groups and one-on-one sessions with conference faculty.
Tuition for the conference is $250. Room and board (double occupancy and 12 meals, including the awards banquet) is $200. Single occupancy rooms are available for $260, including meals.
