Major interstate closure slows traffic through Albuquerque to Glorieta

GLORIETA, N.M. (BP)–Major road construction at the intersection of two interstates will make traveling a bit slower between the Albuquerque airport and Glorieta, a LifeWay Conference Center, according to Billie Koller, Glorieta’s administrative and support manager.

Beginning June 30, the intersection of Interstates 25 and 40 in Albuquerque, N.M., will be in various stages of closure for the next two years, Koller said.

Koller encouraged travelers to allow at least 30 extra minutes for the 80-mile trip.

The interchange, known as the “Big I,” will undergo total reconstruction. Work will take place 24 hours a day. During most hours, one lane of traffic will be open in each direction, but during some nighttime hours, traffic in one or more directions will be routed off the interstate and around construction.

Koller said travelers may take an alternate route, exiting the airport to Gibson Street, turning left on San Mateo and staying on San Mateo until it connects with I-25 on the north side of Albuquerque.

The latest information on construction is available on the Albuquerque Journal Web site at www.abqjournal.com/bigi/alert.htm.
