NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Veteran Christian music artist Michael W. Smith was overcome with emotion as his name was announced as the Gospel Music Association’s 2002 artist of the year.
Smith received an extended standing ovation from the audience inside the Grand Ole Opry.
Smith has been performing Christian music for the past 18 years and was host of last year’s Dove Awards.
“I’m overwhelmed,” Smith said. “I’m overwhelmed by how God is so good to us.”
Smith said he’s reached a point in his life where he just wants to “pour my life into people. That’s all I want to do is serve.”
Steven Curtis Chapman, Nicole C. Mullen, P.O.D. and Third Day were nominees in the category.
