Reporters check out Southern Baptist bus tour in Boston

NEWTON, Mass. (BP)–About a half-dozen reporters were on hand for Southern Baptist Convention President Bobby Welch’s stop at the multicultural Hellenic Gospel Church near Boston Sept. 1.

Mark Pinsky, senior reporter/religion from the Orlando Sentinel, spent the night in a bunk as the guest of Welch and his five-member support team. Michael Paulson, a Boston Globe reporter, traveled with the group from Massachusetts on the next stop on the 50-state expedition, in Warwick, R.I.

An unidentified reporter handed out Gospel tracts to other media members who came to Hellenic Gospel Church on a warm, sunny day. About 30 people were in attendance at the Boston-area church to listen to the call to evangelism and to various anecdotes from Welch, pastor of First Baptist Church in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Hariton Deligiannides, one of the pastors at the church, is of Greek descent. He spoke of the Psalms as “the power of encouragement.”

Welch got a Boston Red Sox cap as a gift and wore it.

Revival was voiced as a prayer request. It came to New England in previous generations. Welch yearns for it to come again.

“May it be soon,” Welch prayed.
