State executives, state paper editors hold annual meetings, elect officers

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (BP)–Associations representing executive directors of the Baptist state conventions and the editors of state Baptist papers met Feb. 9-12 in Colorado Springs in annual sessions which included a workshop on “Leading a Winning Organization” and election of new officers.
The editors, executives and their spouses met jointly Feb. 10 for an all-day workshop led by Reggie McNeal, director of leadership development for the South Carolina Baptist Convention. McNeal led the two groups in a discussion of “Six Present Futures,” “Apostolic Leadership,” “Leading a Winning Organization” and “Finishing Well.”
The two associations traditionally have met at the same time and in the same location, holding some joint meetings as well as conducting separate business sessions.
Don Kirkland, editor of the Baptist Courier, newsjournal of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, was named president-elect of the editors’ group. Next year Kirkland will succeed Mark Wyatt, editor of the California Southern Baptist, who became the new president of the 41-member Association of State Baptist Papers at the conclusion of the meeting.
Wyndell O. Jones, executive director for the Baptist Convention of Iowa, was named president-elect of the Southern Baptist Association of State Convention Executive Directors. Next year Jones will succeed John Sullivan, executive director-treasurer of the Florida Baptist Convention, who became the new president at the end of this year’s meeting.
Both groups will meet in Hawaii next year, Jan. 11-13, for their annual sessions, following the 18th Baptist World Congress of the Baptist World Alliance in Melbourne, Australia, Jan. 5-9.
Included in the groups’ activities were a tour and lunch at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs as well as an introduction to “Southern Baptists in Colorado” by David Bunch, executive director for the Colorado Baptist General Convention.
