17th century commentary added to Southwestern collection

FORT WORTH, Texas (BP)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s rare book collection recently was enriched by the donation of a historically significant New Testament commentary.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--James Lenox Sullivan, Southern Baptist statesman and retired president of the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources), died Dec. 27 at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tenn., following a brief illness. He was 94.
      A private burial service for the family will be conducted Thursday morning. Visitation is at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Nashville, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m.
      Sullivan served as president of the Sunday School Board, the denomination's ministry enrichment, education and publication entity, from 1953 until his retirement in 1975.

ERLC joins brief defending inmates’ religious rights

WASHINGTON (BP)--The Southern Baptist Convention's public policy entity has joined a wide diversity of organizations in calling for the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a federal law protecting the religious freedom of prisoners. The SBC's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission joined in a friend-of-the-court brief contending the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) is constitutional.

NEW ORLEANS (BP)--Ministry won't be easy, Chuck Kelley told the graduating class of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary Dec. 18. Churches are declining. Missionaries are being martyred. Many people are uninterested in the Gospel. But through the power of Jesus Christ, ministers can be victorious, he said.

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP)--Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary celebrated its fall commencement Dec. 18 with 114 graduates receiving degrees from the seminary and 45 from the school’s undergraduate program, Southeastern College at Wake Forest.
    Seminary President Daniel L. Akin presided over his second graduation ceremony, delivering a charge to students to walk faithfully during their ministry. Akin said that in life, graduates will face choices that will dictate the direction of their ministry, their walk with the Lord and their life.
    “Graduation brings you to a very significant fork in the road,” Akin said. “Now what? What is God’s next step in His plan for your life?

Iorg to grads: Ministry requires ‘simple commitment’ to Gospel

MBC attorneys file appeals court brief in legal battle
