WASHINGTON (BP)--The nation of Iraq was founded across fault lines of ancient civilizations, among Arabs and Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites, Muslims and Christians, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice reminded the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Oct. 19.
      “No one can solve this problem for them,” she said in testimony before the committee. “For years these differences were dealt with through violence and repression. Now Iraqis are using compromise and politics.”

Approval of Iraq constitution by citizens appears certain after smooth referendum

BAGHDAD, Iraq (BP)--Early reports indicate a majority of Iraqis approved the proposed constitution Oct. 15, formalizing the nation as a parliamentary democracy during what President Bush has called “a momentous time in the history of the Middle East.”
      While the millions of paper ballots are being counted, it appears that Iraq’s Shiites and Kurds, who together represent about 80 percent of the country’s population, voted yes in the referendum while the Sunnis, representing 20 percent of Iraq’s people, did not accomplish their goal of defeating the constitution, according to The Washington Post.

Despite voter approval, judge rules San Diego cross transfer unconstitutional; appeal coming

SAN DIEGO (BP)--A Superior Court judge has ruled that the transfer of a landmark war memorial to the federal government would be unconstitutional -- even after San Diego voters easily approved a proposition facilitating the transfer. Supporters of the monument, which incorporates a cross as its most prominent element, have vowed to continue the fight.
