FIRST-PERSON: Dead man’s float

OPELIKA, Ala. (BP)--I’ve had one too many household chores, one too many appointments and one too many items on my to-do-list of recent. With eight phone calls and 23 e-mails to return, two piles of laundry to fold and several errands to run, I decided to throw all inklings of responsibility to the wind. “Kids, grab the towels and the sun screen! We’re gonna indulge in an all-day relaxation at the pool!”

MOTHER’S DAY: ‘My struggle & my goal’

OPELIKA, Ala. (BP)--If I had to answer one more insignificant question, wipe one more runny nose or bandage one more boo-boo today, I was going to pull my hair out ... and maybe the hair of whoever is standing close by.

FIRST-PERSON: A first-class opportunity

OPELIKA, Ala. (BP)--I knew something strange was going on when I couldn’t find my seat. After combing the isles of the Delta airplane two times, seat assignment in hand, I was convinced I had lost my mind. Was I on the wrong plane? Would I wind up in China, rather than Florida? Would a voice announce over the intercom, “You have now entered the twilight zone?”

FIRST-PERSON: Pardon me

OPELIKA, Ala. (BP)--As I walked into the crowded police station, children in tow, I held my head down in hopes that no one would recognize me. After all, as the owner of a restaurant as well known for sharing Jesus as it is for serving customers the best fried chicken fingers in town, I should have known better than to exceed the speed limit by 22 mph.

FIRST-PERSON: The name on the card

OPELIKA, Ala. (BP)--The table was deathly cold, as were the doctor's hands that were swiftly at work to remove the small life whose heart had only just begun to beat.

FIRST-PERSON: The gift that keeps on giving

OPELIKA, Ala. (BP)--The hustle and bustle of the holiday season finds us all seeking the answer to the same question, "What gifts will I buy for my loved ones this Christmas?" We rack our brains for just the right items. Like crazed bloodhounds we bound from store to store eager to pounce on the perfect presents, ones that will please the receiver without depleting the pocket of the purchaser. Searching for the ideal gifts can be frustrating. If we're not careful, the hot pursuit of gift buying can hinder us from celebrating and enjoying the reason for the season.

FIRST-PERSON: I was blind but now I see

OPELIKA, Ala. (BP)--"Wait a minute," you say. "I've heard of seeing through the eyes of Christ but how can you see through the eyes of another? Ooooh, I get it. Your eyes didn't work and so you had an eye transplant. Right?" Well, not exactly.

FIRST-PERSON: Shaky landings

OPELIKA, Ala. (BP)--Isn't it funny how the personality traits that first attracted us to our husbands drive us crazy later? Take my husband Jim, for instance. He has always approached adventure with reckless abandon. The fact that he enjoyed rappelling down steep mountains Australian style (upside down) and making 230-foot bungee jumps sent shivers of excitement and intrigue through my entire body, making him the most irresistible man I had ever met. So I married him.
