When God’s People Fail To Vote

Evangelicals have a pitiful record when it comes to voting. Over the last twenty years, on average only half of eligible evangelicals took the time and made the effort to go to the polls. This in itself is sobering, but White House aide Karl Rove has repeatedly lamented that only 15 million evangelicals bothered to […]

Saved by Grace

Roused from his sleep by the sudden jolt of waves crashing against the ship's hull and the roar of gale-force winds, and scrambling from his hammock as his cabin started to fill with seawater, he heard a shipmate on deck scream that the ship was sinking. He raced up the ladder to the deck but […]

As You Are Going, Make Disciples – Starting In The Home!

Youth appear to be abandoning churches in droves. According to some estimates, 88 percent of teens attending evangelical churches will forsake their church, if not their faith, by the time they reach age 18.1 But worse, according to those same estimates the departure rate among pastors' children appears to be no different. It seems if […]

When God’s Plan Doesn’t Make Sense

When my father pastored a small Southern Baptist church in rural Northeast Mississippi, we lived in the pastorium, an old stone house that was full of character. The floor plan was consistent with the older homes of the area – it had one long hardwood hallway running from the front door through the center to […]

Ministering to Victims of Y2K

Preparations are being made across the nation for the millennial calendar roll over. Major businesses, the entire banking industry, and governments at every level have spent billions attempting to prevent a millennial meltdown and prepare contingencies for potential Y2K-related crises. Government and private emergency management agencies have warned citizens to prepare for one to two […]

Sinful Silence: Ignoring God’s Demand for Civil Morality

The November elections are only weeks away. They provide the opportunity for God’s people, through their vote, to make a sweeping contribution to our government’s moral direction. Yet, if this year’s turnout among evangelicals mirror’s past years, the prospect for significant improvement looks dim indeed. Consider the voting record of those who claim to be […]

Wounded Soldiers

The newly gathered conference attendees wandered about the room, cautiously asking each other for coins as part of an odd and awkward assignment. The ice breaker exercise required each of these pastors and their wives to produce a dime, a nickel, and a penny. Whatever coins they lacked, they were to solicit from other participants. That task completed, they were instructed to return to their seats, examine each coin carefully, and determine which coin best reflected their feelings. Then, each participant was asked to share which coin they chose and why.

True Love Waits Works

It appears that for the first time in twenty-five years, the number of sexually active teenagers is decreasing. According to the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth, the percentage of teen girls having sex dropped in 1995 — from a high of 55 percent in 1990 to 50 percent in 1995. The percentage of girls […]

When We Remain Silent

Thousands of Christians abroad will be tortured today at the hands of ruthless oppressors. Their offense — faith. Thousands of babies in the U.S will be murdered today at the hands of mercenary abortionists. Their offense — inconvenience. In spite of the magnitude of these cruelties, and despite the emotional pleas of those who defend […]

The High Calling of Fatherhood

Fatherhood is under fire in Hollywood, in the courts and in the test tube. The most noted fathers in America's entertainment subculture are an ignorant slob (Al Bundy), a shallow klutz (Tim Taylor) and a slovenly clod (Homer Simpson). Concurrently, some courts are granting adoption rights to lesbians, tossing the role of fatherhood onto a […]
