NIAS, Indonesia (BP)--California Southern Baptist volunteers were among the first Americans to provide medical relief on the Indonesian island of Nias after an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 8.2 rocked the island March 28.
      The volunteers were already in Indonesia to provide relief on Banda Aceh, one of the most devastated areas after the Dec. 26 tsunami that hit southern Asia. As many as 200,000 were killed in the province.

Calif. Baptists recommend changes to state entities

HIGHLAND, Calif. (BP)--Messengers to the California Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting Nov. 9-10 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Highland approved several bylaw changes concerning the relationship of CSBC entities based on recommendations from the Agency Relations Committee, appointed at the 2003 annual meeting to study the matter.

EXETER, Calif. (BP)--On a sunny day in early June the small Central California town of Exeter looked as though it were decorated for a patriotic celebration. And in a way it was. The community of 9,500 was celebrating the life of one of its favorite sons, a young California Southern Baptist minister killed in the line of duty in Iraq.
    Spc. Daniel P. Unger, 19, son of Marc and Lynda Unger, was memorialized and buried June 4, a week-and-a-half after being mortally wounded by shrapnel while protecting Iraqi citizens at his base just south of Baghdad.
    Marc Unger is pastor of Exeter Baptist Church. Daniel was a licensed minister.
    During the funeral several speakers paid tribute to Daniel, who was part of the 1st Battalion, 185th Armored Regiment, 81st Separate Armor Brigade, Alpha Company of the California National Guard.

Providing meals

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (BP)--Three California Southern Baptist Convention mobile kitchens and a portable shower unit have been deployed in Southern California to minister to those affected by wildfires raging throughout the region.
      The ministries marked the initial stages of a response that Southern Baptist Disaster Relief officials say will involve volunteers from multiple states.

      Don Hargis, disaster relief coordinator for the California convention, reported that one of the mobile kitchens and a portable shower unit have been stationed at the San Bernardino Airport, one of the region's key shelters, with more than 1,800 people displaced by the fires. Southern Baptist volunteers prepared 2,000 meals each for lunch and dinner on Oct. 29. Another 100 people are housed at an overflow shelter at Immanuel Baptist Church in Highland.

Calif. Baptists stand firm on Baptist Faith & Message

FRESNO, Calif. (BP)--Messengers to the 62nd annual meeting of California Southern Baptist Convention rejected changing the convention name and kept the Baptist Faith and Message as a requirement for membership of churches.
