Appalachian Regional Ministry: multi-state initiative’s new name

SCOTT DEPOT, W.Va. (BP)– Appalachian Regional Ministry was announced as the new name of the new Appalachian Mountain Ministry by the regional steering committee of the multi-state initiative during its Sept. 23 meeting.
The name change became necessary when it was discovered there are several independent ministries already using the name Appalachian Mountain Ministry in the region. To avoid conflict or confusion among Southern Baptists of the region, the steering committee decided it is better to make the name change now than to risk problems that might develop later.
Except for the difficulty in communicating the name change, the committee is enthusiastic about the new name.
The consortium of state conventions undertaking a broad range of Appalachian ministries encompasses the Georgia Baptist Convention, Kentucky Baptist Convention, Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware, Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, State Convention of Baptists in Ohio, Baptist Convention of Pennsylvania/South Jersey, South Carolina Baptist Convention, Tennessee Baptist Convention, Baptist General Association of Virginia, Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia and West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists.
