Bible Study: July 5, 2015

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the MasterWork curriculum.

Bible Passage: Job 40:1-14

Discussion Questions: What situations tempt you to play God? What does it take for you to be reminded that God is God and you are not? How can adults honestly take their questions and hurts to God without putting themselves in the place of God and suggesting to Him how He ought to conduct Himself?

Food for Thought:

Just over two weeks ago, a 21-year-old man sat with worshipers at Wednesday evening prayer meeting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C. He had not come to worship or to pray however, but to kill, and that’s what he did, murdering nine church members before fleeing. We can imagine some of the questions the remaining members of the church and the community have for God? Their questions likely echo some of those posed by Job after his ordeal.

But in the case of Job, his questions went beyond questions. In his vigorous efforts to justify himself and proclaim his innocence before his simple-minded friends, Job overstated his own innocence, and implied guilt and unrighteousness on God’s part. He longed for the opportunity to vindicate himself before God. Beginning in chapter 38, God reversed the tables with a series of over 70 questions for Job. Given his chance, Job found that he had no answers for a single question God asked Him. Job was reminded that God is God, and he was not. Therefore, Job realized he should stop trying to play God.
