NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Bible Passages: Mark 15:42-27, 16:1-8

Discussion Questions:
— What news have you heard recently that was so astonishing you needed time to reflect, so you could understand what it meant for you?
— What emotions does the resurrection of Jesus stir in you? Explain.

Food for thought:

Some news is just too astonishing to process. It may be a world event or something that impacts only you or your family. The information makes us stop in our tracks as if nothing else mattered. We may need some alone time to process the news and sort through our emotions. Our brains can only process so much at once and it may take hours or days for our thoughts to catch up with each other.

After His death, Jesus’ body was removed from the cross and placed in a tomb. The tomb was sealed with a rock and everyone waited until Sunday when the body could be properly repaired.

Several women arrived early in the morning and found the large stone removed. They entered the tomb to be greeted by what Mark called a “young man wearing a white robe” (see Mark 16:5). Mark used words like alarmed, trembling, astonished and afraid to describe the emotions of the women.

The women were so taken back, the “man wearing a white robe” had to tell them exactly what to do. The women were not to fear. They were to look where Jesus’ body had been. They were to find the disciples, especially Peter, and report the news. The women, the first to learn that Jesus was resurrected, needed direction to respond.

The directions given to the women help us today. We need not be fearful when confronted with the truth of the resurrection. The news can bring us peace and joy, knowing that we can now have salvation through faith in Jesus.

We also can look at the evidence for ourselves. We can look at the eyewitness accounts found in Scripture and the testimony of changed lives. Having truly examined the resurrection, we can comment on its truth. We can tell people about what we discovered. We have no reason to withhold what we have found. Do not be afraid. Look for yourself. Tell someone!
