Mobile’s Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit extended two weeks to May 8

MOBILE, Ala. (BP)–In response to crowds of visitors drawn to Mobile, Ala., for the Gulf Coast Exploreum’s Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) has authorized the scrolls to be on display two weeks longer than originally scheduled. The scrolls will be displayed through May 8.

“Due to the overwhelming success of the exhibition, the IAA wanted to give potential visitors an extra 14 days to see scrolls which rarely leave Israel,” Exploreum Executive Director Michael Sullivan said in a news release.

As of April 21, the scrolls exhibit had attracted more than 172,000 visitors. For weeks, the gallery has operated daily at 90 to 95 percent capacity. The demand for tickets to the exhibit had only grown as the original close date of April 24 approached. Now, the extension to May 8 makes an additional 40,000 tickets available.

“We believe adding 14 days is a better option than simply extending the hours of operation to midnight and later as was done in Houston to accommodate the last-minute ticket demands there,” Sullivan said.

The exhibit includes seven biblical scrolls, one of which is a Deuteronomy scroll containing the Ten Commandments. Five additional non-biblical texts are also on display, along with artifacts and manuscripts on loan from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary’s Bible Lands Museum, Florida State University and Atlanta’s Ahavath Achim Synagogue.
