LifeWay special needs ministry turns 30

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--This fall LifeWay Christian Resources celebrates the 30th anniversary of publishing printed Sunday School lessons for special needs learners, resources that were rare prior to the late 1970s.

RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP)--"Go, Bobby! Go!"       Below the blindfold that covered his eyes, a broad grin spread across Bobby Shifflett's face.

Mother-daughter event focuses on virtue

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (BP)–Author Vicki Courtney gets an intended laugh when she calls raunchy fashions peddled to preschoolers the “Prosti-Tot line.” But, from Hollywood to Madison Avenue, the unrelenting pressure on girls to dress sexy is serious business, she said. Nearly 1,000 mothers and their daughters gathered at First Baptist Church in Spartanburg, S.C., for a […]

Don’t use the ‘R’ word

RALEIGH, N.C. (BP)--Ben Stiller used to be one of my favorite comedians. He's lost my respect with his derogatory abuse of the word "retard" in his newest film, "Tropic Thunder" ...

Special needs Sunday Schools on the rise

RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP)–Special needs advocates are fond of pointing out that Jesus spent much of His ministry among people with disabilities. However, the message of His ministry was for everyone, said Carlton McDaniel, special needs specialist for LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. “The second half of that story is that by meeting […]

RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP)–Mike Hatfield paused to think about what impact Sunday School Week at LifeWay Ridgecrest Conference Center could have. Spouses grow, play in Blue Ridge Mts.

RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP)–As instructors demonstrated safety harnesses for the challenges of the ropes course, Karen Quigg said she felt as if she was part of the “Amazing Race” reality show rather than a marriage conference. “Amazing Race meets Amazing Grace” might better describe the Marriage Impact 2008 retreat at LifeWay Ridgecrest Conference Center in North […]

Singles urged to shun compromise

RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP)–The pressure to be dating or married leads many single adults into bad relationships because they think, “What could be worse than being alone?” keynote speaker David Edwards noted at this year’s Singles Labor Day Weekend 2007 at LifeWay Ridgecrest Conference Center in North Carolina. “If we compromise, we miss the blessing of […]

‘I never wrote anything before!’

RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP)–Sherry Carter’s excuses for not writing ended with her layoff from Lockheed Martin. A biomedical engineer, Carter trained the Space Shuttle Columbia astronaut crew for three years to test their physical responses to space. In 2003, she watched in horror the day she worked the ill-fated shuttle landing at Johnson Space Center. The […]

Marriages strengthened via adventure

RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP)–LifeWay Ridgecrest Conference Center’s sprawling wooded campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains is idyllic for contemplative, prayerful walks -– and it makes great camouflage to ambush your spouse in laser tag. “Marriage is an adventure,” that, unlike laser tag, too often becomes a battlefield littered with sneak attacks and unhealed emotional wounds, said […]
