In Honduras, hunger offering aids Mayan corn farmers

LAS MEDIAS DOS, Honduras (BP) -- Lucio, a 23-year-old Chorti farmer, emerges from the hedgerows with a machete in hand. He has been tending his small plot of land in preparation for the next sowing season for corn. In the past, soil erosion complicated his efforts and made his farm less productive.

‘Killer’ bees, Bapt. relief efforts help farmers

COPÁN RUINAS, Honduras (BP) -- The buzzing grows louder as the small group climbs the mountain toward the bee hives. Decked out in protective gear, the group approaches carefully. They've heard the stories of these bees -- Africanized "killer" bees who swarm aggressively and whose painful venom can damage human tissue and even lead to kidney failure and death. "The bees are a very different type of work. Sometimes it's fun but also sometimes a little scary," says Obando Velásquez, an agricultural extensionist with the Chorti ...

Overcoming fears, volunteer leads sex-trafficking ministry

RICHMOND, Va. (BP) -- At midnight on a cold Friday in January, Loree Becton stands on a street corner along Jefferson Davis Highway in Richmond, Va. -- an area notoriously known for prostitution and crime. She's come a long way. Until a few months ago, Becton -- wife of Mark Becton, pastor of Grove Avenue Baptist Church in Richmond -- had to whisper the word, "prostitute," and would turn red-faced when she did. Now, she is here among them, praying for an opportunity to tell the women of the streets how much they are loved.

FRONT LINES: Chaplains impart support, strength to soldiers in combat zone

TONGDUCHON, South Korea (BP)--Lt. Col. David Rogers understands the importance of having chaplains in a war zone. He says the three best chaplains he's ever known served with him in combat.       While military chaplains do not carry weapons or drive vehicles used as weaponry, they nevertheless serve alongside the soldiers, witnessing all the horrors of war.       "You really don't think much about the chaplain until the lead is flying," Rogers said, "but if he's known and understood by the men, all the better."       Since 9/11, military chaplains have risen to the occasion, providing soldiers counsel and support, Rogers said.       Rogers is stationed at Camp Casey in Tongduchon, Korea, a few miles from the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea. He is the commander of one of the three Southern Baptist chaplains stationed there.
