SBC, church’s role in politics focus of 9Marks panel

DALLAS (BP) -- The Southern Baptist Convention's current condition and how churches should engage politics were topics of conversation at this year's 9Marks evening events, June 11-12, in Dallas. Mark Dever moderated both 9Marks events, hosted with Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dever is the senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., and president of 9Marks, an organization dedicated to helping foster church health. The events, which started at 9 p.m., were held in conjunction with the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting.

Jen Wilkin at women’s leadership event: Be fearless

DALLAS(BP) -- Jen Wilkin encouraged women to be fearless in their advocacy on behalf of others and to fear the Lord above all else during this year's Women's Leadership Breakfast June 13 in conjunction with the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting. Teaching from Exodus 1:15-22, the author and Bible teacher encouraged women to fear the Lord and to stand up for their sisters in Christ who need advocacy. More than 200 women attended the event. "I pray that this will be a room full of women who will speak on behalf of your sisters with fearlessness," she said.

Honor God in workplace, Women & Work panel exhorts

DALLAS (BP) -- Women's roles in the workplace was the subject of the panel "Women & Work: Stepping into Kingdom Productivity," June 12 in Dallas in conjunction with the 2018 Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting. Courtney L. Moore, a Southern Baptist pastor's wife, contract writer, and mother of three, moderated the panel sponsored by Women & Work, a nonprofit organization she founded in April to help women flourish in their God-called positions. "We want to see you flourish," Moore, whose husband Brent is an adult group's pastor for Pinelake Church in Brandon, Miss., told attendees. "We want to see you honor God in the workplace."

Akin to SEBTS grads: Great Commission is their banner

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP) -- Living out the Great Commission in life and ministry was the theme of spring graduation at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. "You all know that this was the banner under which you entered Southeastern Seminary," SEBTS President Danny Akin said, "and this will also be the banner under which you graduate." On May 11, 244 graduates received their diplomas from SEBTS -- 195 from the seminary and 49 from The College at Southeastern.

New books on SBC relay practical, biblical insights

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP) -- Who runs the Southern Baptist Convention? The simple answer is, you do. This is how the authors of a new book, "SBC FAQs: A Ready Reference," emphasize the vital role that individual Southern Baptists have in the life of their convention. In SBC FAQs, Keith Harper, senior professor of Baptist studies at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Amy Whitfield, SEBTS director of marketing and communications, seek to explain how the 173-year-old convention operates through a series of questions and answers.

TRUSTEES: Endowed post, female board chair at SEBTS

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP) -- Scott Hildreth was installed April 10 as the George Liele Director of the Lewis A. Drummond Center for Great Commission Studies, the first endowed directorship at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. The installation of Hildreth, assistant professor of global studies who has led the Drummond Center since 2009, was among the events and decisions during SEBTS trustees' April 8-10 meeting, during which the Southeastern Society of seminary supporters also met at the Wake Forest, N.C., campus.

Southeastern aiding Cuban convention’s momentum

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP) -- The Cuban church planting movement has been on the move for nearly 30 years as house churches have grown in number and people have come to Christ by the thousands. Seminary’s impact strengthens family’s call to serve

(BP) -- As Lesley Hildreth walked across the stage with her daughter, Rachel Hildreth Breniser, at Binkley Chapel on Dec. 8 to receive their degrees, the moment represented not only personal accomplishments but also Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary's influence on the Hildreth family. "Southeastern is a key vehicle that has enabled us to serve the Lord better and serve the Lord together," said Scott Hildreth, director of the Center for Great Commission Studies at Southeastern, husband to Lesley and father to Rachel.

Dividing the passage into multiple sections, Akin highlighted the unparalleled love of God displayed in John 3:16 in his address to graduates, family and friends of Southeastern Seminary and The College at Southeastern.
