ALPHARETTA, GA (BP)--Barely a week after Hurricane Charley ravaged 25 Florida counties, killing 25 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless, without food and electricity, the national attention has moved on to other matters.
      However, while the national attention moves to the presidential election, the Iraq War and the usual fare of celebrity news, Southern Baptist volunteers continue to pour into Florida, bringing relief and hope to hundreds of thousands.
      “Southern Baptists have prepared over 350,000 meals in the last 11 days,” said Sandy Lenahan, who coordinates the national mobilization center located at the North American Mission Board building north of Atlanta. “We have more than 1,300 volunteers manning more than 130 units from 23 state Baptist conventions, and more are on the way.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)--Southern Baptists set another record in giving to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions in 2003. Robert E. (Bob) Reccord, president of the North American Mission Board, announced Jan. 10 during the annual meeting of Woman's Missionary Union's executive board that Southern Baptists gave $49,650,279 last year.

NAMB cuts budget, reduces staff

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP)--The North American Mission Board's proposed budget for 2004 will be 6 percent less than the current year's budget, forcing the board to reduce staff and program support. The proposed budget eliminates 31 positions, seven of which are currently filled by employees who will not be offered other positions or retirement.

U.S. appeals court allows FamilyNet to stay on DISH

ATLANTA (BP)--A federal appeals court has suspended a July 9 injunction that would have resulted in the immediate removal of Southern Baptist television programming from the DISH satellite network. The lawsuit that brought the action, however, still threatens to keep the FamilyNet television off the satellite.
