Baptist basketball team shares gospel in Brazil

FLORIANOPOLIS, Brazil (BP)–Six hundred quarts of Brunswick stew: $2500. Five portable basketball goals: $700. Price airlines wanted to carry basketball goals: $1,500. Thirteen Virginia Baptists sharing the message of Christ in Florianopolis, Brazil: priceless.

From Friday, May 18, until Monday, May 28, 13 members of a Virginia Baptist basketball team traveled to Florianopolis, a city of more than 225,000 people. It’s the capital of Santa Catarina, a southern state on the Atlantic coast, and has both a mainland and island component.

Most inhabitants are non-practicing Catholics who also engage in one or more forms of “spiritist” religions. Baptists, who represent one-tenth of 1 percent of the population, are beginning to grow more rapidly through methods emphasizing lay leadership and involvement.
