Churches offered help in staff support planning

DALLAS (BP)–The Annuity Board of the Southern Baptist Convention is offering churches assistance in planning financial support for pastors and staff members.
A 24-page booklet, titled “Planning Financial Support,” is available in English and Spanish and is offered free of charge in quantity to meet the needs of any size church. In workbook form, it leads a church committee to determine pay arrangements for every church employee. The five-step process includes: determining needs, consideration of a method for paying ministry expenses, establishing a benefits plan, setting personal income and completing a financial support worksheet that can easily transfer to the church’s annual budget document.
The Annuity Board’s workbook is designed to function cooperatively with state convention personnel who provide direct assistance to churches on the same subject.
Structured on a biblical mandate, the booklet affirms, “The Lord commands that those who preach the gospel should be supported by those who receive the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:14). The publication also introduces the church committee to relevant Internal Revenue Service regulations, and leads to a realistic analysis of personal financial needs of each staff member.
“Planning Financial Support” and other resources can be ordered by calling the Annuity Board’s toll-free number 1-800-262-0511, and pressing 1 to reach a customer relations specialist. The text of the booklet is also found on the Annuity Board’s Internet home page on the World Wide Web at www.absbc.org.
