MACON, Ga. — Mount Zion Baptist Church in Monroe County, Ga., has fired a youth pastor after learning of his arrest in connection with a Pennsylvania child pornography investigation, while law enforcement officials continue to examine whether any related crimes may have occurred in Georgia.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, 30-year-old John Tyler Moreland of Macon was identified as a suspect after Pennsylvania State Police traced downloads of suspected child sexual abuse material to the area of Mount Zion Baptist Church off Rivoli Road, where he was employed as a youth pastor.

The sheriff’s office said arrest warrants were issued in Pennsylvania, and Moreland was later taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service in Houston County. He is being held without bond while awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania.

In a statement released Wednesday, Mount Zion said it became aware of Moreland’s arrest on April 13 and terminated him immediately.

“On April 13, 2026, Mount Zion became aware of the arrest of our Director of Students and Families, Tyler Moreland, on charges stemming from alleged illicit communications and conduct involving children,” the church said.

The church said it is cooperating fully with investigators.

Mount Zion also said that before hiring Moreland in June 2025, the church followed its usual screening process.

“Mr. Moreland had been employed by Mount Zion Baptist Church since June 2025. Prior to his employment, interviews were conducted, and background checks were completed, all showing no indication of any prior misconduct or concerning behavior. During his employment, the church was not made aware of any indication of inappropriate behavior or conduct,” the church said.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said it is now working with the FBI to determine whether any offenses were committed in Georgia. Search warrants have been obtained for electronic devices in Monroe and Bibb counties.

The church said it remains fully committed to protecting children within the congregation and throughout the community and to ensuring that any concerns are addressed promptly.

Church leaders added that they are praying for healing for the congregation, the community, and all those affected by the situation.
