Nicole C. Mullen wins female vocalist of year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Quoting from Proverbs 31, Nicole C. Mullen was awarded the 2002 Gospel Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year Dove. Mullen became the first female to ever win both Songwriter of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year.

Mullen brought last year’s Dove Awards’ audience to their feet when she closed the evening with an electric and passionate performance of her Dove Award-winning song, Redeemer.

“I want to thank the women of faith who have gone on before us,” she said. “As it says in Proverbs, a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.”

Mullen also thanked the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Through him we live, we move and we have our being,” she said.

Mullen was competing against Natalie Grant, Nichole Nordeman, CeCe Winans and Rebecca St. James.

Last year Nordeman was awarded the Dove in this category.

Sandi Patty holds the record for 11 consecutive Doves in this category from 1982-92.
