‘Radical Obedience’ video: post-9/11 view of missions

RICHMOND, Va. (BP)–A new video, “Radical Obedience: Beyond 9/11,” shows Southern Baptists around the world responding to the Sept. 11 attacks, reminding that God’s work is not yet finished.

“Scripture has called us to be radically obedient, to go beyond language and cultural walls so that all peoples may know him,” said International Mission Board spokesman Mark Snowden. “Many Southern Baptists have already committed to become radically obedient by praying for the Muslim people of the world. Others have displayed their radical obedience by going, in peace, to make disciples in Jesus’ name.”

Radical Obedience: Beyond 9/11 captures what God is doing through Christians working among Muslims around the world.

Viewers will see what it is like to be expelled for sharing their faith, understand how Christians feel to have basic rights stripped away because of their faith, and weep with those leaving family and friends behind in order to share Jesus with Muslims.

Viewers are shown Muslims separated from God’s love and truth by walls of religious and civil law, family and community relationships, tradition and history, mistrust and fear — and God’s love miraculously penetrating those barriers through Southern Baptists on mission.

The video lets viewers walk the dusty streets of a North African city with a volunteer team that showed God’s love to Muslims. Viewers will hear the tearful testimony of a pastor who had to explain to his young daughters why he might not return from his volunteer trip to Indonesia. The video also features testimonies from Dayna Curry and Heather Mercer, former missionaries with Shelter Now International of Germany, who were held prisoner by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Viewers will be challenged to become personally involved through focused prayer, as a volunteer, as an individual or as a family.

Radical Obedience: Beyond 9/11 is designed to be viewed in segments or in one session. The videotape costs $5 and is only available through the International Mission Board’s Resource Center: toll free at 1-800-866-3621, on the Web at http://resources.imb.org or via e-mail to [email protected].

Sept. 11 resources also are available from two other Southern Baptist entities, the North American Mission Board’s “Hope Remembering 9-11” website at www.namb.net/911 and LifeWay Christian Resources’ “United Sunday” website at www.lifeway.com/unitedsunday.
