ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) – A shipment of shockwave mold remediation and financial support has been sent by Send Relief to areas of Hawaii still recovering from flooding not seen in decades.

“The islands of Oahu and Maui in Hawaii have seen hundreds of homes damaged by significant flooding,” said Coy Webb, Crisis Response Director for Send Relief. “Send Relief and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief have begun responding in the aftermath of this destruction to bring real help and the hope of Christ to disaster survivors. Please pray for the people of Hawaii and Southern Baptist teams as they respond to this historic flooding.”

North Carolina Baptist Disaster Relief announced this morning that it has sent prayer and financial support in the recovery.

Back-to-back “Kona low” storms dropped up to a foot of rain in many areas from March 10-22, with some reports of over 30 cumulative inches in some areas. Saturated ground from earlier rains led to flash floods landslides and a near-overtopping of Wahiawā Dam on Oahu that forced a mandatory evacuation.

No deaths have been reported, but more than 230 people were rescued. Power outages and evacuations affected about 5,500 residents.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green has submitted a formal request for a Major Disaster Declaration to support statewide recovery efforts from the storms.

“These storms have impacted every county in our state and stretched our emergency response capabilities,” he said. “This request is about getting our communities the support they need to recover quickly and safely.”
