KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP)–Mike Sweeney sparked a flurry of response recently when he charged the mound and pummeled Detroit Tigers pitcher Jeff Weaver, igniting a bench-clearing brawl.
Kansas City Royals fans cheered the emotion and intensity shown by their first baseman. Even the Royals front office was thrilled with Sweeney’s outburst. According to Baseball Weekly’s Bob Nightengale, “Certainly, Sweeney went a long way to erasing his image of being ‘too nice a guy.'”
