Venturing into downtown N.O., Texas volunteers are in the convoy
NEW ORLEANS (BP)--The efforts of Southern Baptists of Texas Convention disaster relief crews could expand significantly as cooperative efforts with the Salvation Army move into New Orleans. Crews made the first of many ventures downtown Sept. 4, distributing sandwiches and water to government and military personnel working in the French Quarter and civilians stranded there.
‘Colonial House’ enables pastor to give worldwide testimony
WACO, Texas (BP)—-Jeff Wyers, playing the role of a 17-century autocratic governor in the PBS series “Colonial House,” faced the challenge by turning to prayer.
In addition to trying to communicate the concepts of religious authority alongside the love and grace of Jesus Christ, Wyers –- a Southern Baptist pastor -- and his family suffered a most public tragedy when the young man who was to become their son-in-law was killed in an auto accident back home.

In one SBEP initiative alone, 253 professions of faith were recorded as churches and individuals hosted numerous "watch parties" throughout the greater Houston area, supplanting beer and car commercials with taped interviews with Christian football players from the Houston Texans.

Super Bowl Evangelism Project organizers are seeking to infuse every aspect of Sunday's big game with the Holy Spirit. Among the workers: mission groups from Florida, Illinois and Virginia who, aside from enjoying the balmy January weather, are busy throughout the city in an effort to reach people for Christ.

They had gathered shortly before noon to hear President George W. Bush address families and a nation grieving for the loss of the crew of STS-107 Columbia. Shuffling into the room that serves as the school's chapel and the sanctuary for Bay Area Baptist Church in League City, Texas, the intermediate and high school students chattered away, laughed and caught up with the latest school buzz.
