FIRST-PERSON: Restful holidays

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--During the holidays, sleep and rest seem to be rare treats. The extra holiday activities and commitments added to the everyday schedule of life eat into the hours that most of us allot for sleep.

FIRST-PERSON: Walking through the holidays

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--It's November, and with it comes the joy of the holiday season, shopping, decorating, celebrations, parties, time with friends and family and lots of food. Many times these events cause additional stress and leave you feeling like you're "running" through the holidays. To help handle the stress and still get everything done, try to "walk" through the holidays this year by adding more walking into your activities. Here are some ways to walk more during the holidays.

FIRST-PERSON: Perfection is impossible, so strive for progress

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--What do elevators, leaf blowers and car wash machines have in common? Advances in technology or modern inventions for an easier life? Maybe, but "advances" that make our lives "easier" can be thieves stealing our good health.

FIRST-PERSON: Train up a child for good health

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Childhood obesity is increasing at alarming rates in our nation. Many of these children are now at risk for diseases that were once thought of as only for adults.

FIRST-PERSON: Overcoming pitfalls to healthy choices

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--You have heard about all the benefits of eating healthier, exercise and weight loss. You are ready to feel better and have more energy. You have every good intention to begin making healthier lifestyle choices. So, you commit to changing your habits.

FIRST-PERSON: The better health challenge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--At this year's Southern Baptist Convention in St. Louis, Annuity Board President O.S. Hawkins challenged pastors and messengers "to begin taking the issue of wellness to heart." He said, "During 2001 at least one-half of the medical claims paid out were for preventable diseases. As a whole, we are overweight and do not exercise enough."

FIRST-PERSON: Assessing & overcoming the ‘stuffed’ feeling

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Many of us are familiar with that uncomfortable, stuffed feeling of eating too much. Maybe you just experience this at Thanksgiving, but many people experience this on a daily basis. Regular overeating, or binge eating, is characterized by out-of-control eating in which you consume too much food without the prompts of hunger, fullness or even tasting the food. Essentially the food becomes a medication or comfort in times of stress, depression, loneliness, boredom or emotional distress.

FIRST-PERSON: Take steps for good health

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Would you like to reduce your risk of certain types of cancer and diabetes by 50 percent? If so, studies show that beginning and maintaining a regular exercise program may be just what the doctor needs to order.

FIRST-PERSON: A prophet & his veggies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--One of my favorite Bible stories can be found in Daniel 1.

FIRST-PERSON: Created to move

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--God's design for the world was a perfect plan. He finished his work by creating the most complex of all living things, made in his own image and capable of a multitude of tasks. In Genesis 2, God gave the first human, Adam, an assignment to care for the Garden of Eden. Adam was strong enough to do this job without the help of machinery, electricity, power tools or transportation. Throughout the Bible, people were required to be physically capable of walking long distances, gardening and farming with hand tools, digging wells and carrying heavy loads.
