More than 20 deaths after Ida remnants slam Northeast

NEW YORK (AP) – A stunned U.S. East Coast woke up Thursday to a rising death toll, surging rivers and destruction after the remnants of Hurricane Ida walloped the region with record-breaking rain, filling low-lying apartments with water and turning roads into car-swallowing canals.

FORT WORTH, Texas (BP)--Kenneth S. Hemphill announced his retirement as president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary April 8 to take a new position as national strategist for the Southern Baptist Convention's "Empowering Kingdom Growth" movement.
     Hemphill's new work, after nine years as president of Southwestern, will be a joint venture with the SBC Executive Committee and LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville, Tenn., to begin this summer.

Church to become Houston campus for Southwestern in Nov. 4 vote

FORT WORTH, Texas (BP)--Park Place Baptist Church in Houston voted Nov. 4 to deed its $7 million site to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary to be used as the seminary's Houston campus.
      About 240 people voted on the proposal at a special business meeting. The agreement allows Park Place Baptist to continue to meet in the building and perform its ministries from there.
      The church has been a landmark in Houston's east end since 1961. The eight-and-a-half-acre campus includes a 2,000-seat auditorium, one- and two-story educational space for 1,500 people and a gymnasium/recreation facility.
