LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- The church has been in a "predicament" for 2000 years, with its continuing faithfulness determined by its commitment to stand firm despite that predicament, R. Albert Mohler Jr. said during Southern Baptist Theological Seminary's fall convocation Aug. 27. Mohler, Southern Seminary's president, drew from 1 Corinthians 11:18-31 in an address titled "The Christian Predicament," noting that the church is considered foolish and scandalous for its commitment to the cross of Christ -- and that is exactly what God intended in His wisdom.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- Todd Fisher, a senior pastor for more than 25 years and former member of the trustee board at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, joined the faculty of SBTS earlier this month. Fisher, who graduated from the seminary's doctor of philosophy program last year, joins the faculty as assistant professor of Christian preaching. Fisher earned his master of theology and doctor of philosophy degrees from SBTS in 2018. He also served as a member of the seminary's board of trustees from 2006 to 2016, and as its chairman from 2013 to 2014.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- Matthew Haste has been named to the faculty of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as associate professor of biblical spirituality and director of professional doctoral studies. Haste, who holds M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees from Southern, has been associate professor of ministry studies at Columbia International University's seminary and school of ministry since 2015.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- Andrew Walker of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission has been named as assistant professor of Christian ethics and apologetics at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Walker will continue to serve as the ERLC's director of research and senior fellow in Christian ethics.

(BP) -- The church's integrity, or internal stability, is maintained by understanding and articulating key paradoxes in the Bible, Russell Moore said in Southern Baptist Theological Seminary's Norton Lectures. While the word "integrity" often is used regarding moral character, it really represents the "holding together" of something, like a building or institution, Moore said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- Seminary graduates bear witness to the glory of God's reign promised by the birth of the Messiah, said R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, at the school's 222nd commencement exercises. During the Dec. 6 ceremony in Louisville, Ky., 156 master's and doctoral students were present to receive their degrees on Friday as members of an overall 208-person graduating class. In his address, titled "For the Earth Shall Be Full of the Knowledge of the Lord as the Waters Cover the Sea," Mohler said the graduates of Southern Seminary are part of a global movement that began in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. And that movement will not stop until God's glory spreads to the entire world, he said.
