CARTERSVILLE, Ga. (BP)–Two members of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Cartersville, Ga., died Feb. 6 in a remote area of Honduras after the truck they were riding in flipped over.
Ric Mason, 58, and Perry Goad, 46, were part of a group of 28 volunteers working through Honduras Outreach International, a nonprofit organization based in Decatur, Ga. Martha Fuller, a member of First United Methodist Church in Newnan, Ga., also died when the open-roof vehicle, generally associated with transporting soldiers, rolled over in rugged terrain.
Two other members of Tabernacle Baptist, David Apple, 52, and Cary Roth, 33, were injured in the accident. Apple suffered a separated shoulder and Roth sustained knee injuries. Church members gathered late Tuesday night at Tabernacle to pray after hearing news of the accident.
Pastor Don Hattaway said church staff members were notified of the accident around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Upon receiving a secondary confirmation, staff informed the families of the deceased.
“Both of these guys were the type to be involved,” Hattaway said of Mason and Goad. “They were the ones who get out there and do the work. They will be greatly missed by their church and their families. They had a passion for missions and epitomized going into the world to preach the Gospel.”
Goad is survived by his wife Sharon; two sons, Shay, 21, and Adam, 18; and a daughter, Kendra, 20. Mason is survived by his wife Marsha; a son, Scott, 22, and daughter Joannah Sadler, 26.
