Bible Study: July 19, 2015

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Bible Studies for Life curriculum.

Bible Passages: Jonah 1:1-5, 10

Discussion Question: What’s a great way to catch your attention?

Food for Thought:

Southern Baptist Convention President Ronnie Floyd is passionate that we — as individuals, churches, and a denomination — experience spiritual renewal and revival. We’ve been asleep for too long.

Rest is a good thing. Nothing refreshes like a good night’s sleep. And who doesn’t enjoy the occasional afternoon nap? But from another perspective, sleep can be dangerous.

It’s dangerous to be spiritually asleep. Life has a way of lulling us to sleep spiritually. If we allow ourselves to settle into a spiritual snooze, after a while we simply die spiritually.

It’s time to wake up! Our greatest need as believers is to experience a spiritual renewal from God, and we see that need through the Book of Jonah. We see a man — a prophet no less! — who got off course in his relationship with God. Jonah’s move away from God’s instruction wasn’t subtle; he flatly refused to listen to God. But God got Jonah’s attention in a most unexpected way.

God loves us and He acts to get our attention and draw us back to Himself.
