Emergency child care joins Baptist relief for N.M. fire

SANTA FE, N.M. (BP)–Two emergency child care units have joined Baptist disaster relief units in northern New Mexico assisting victims of the recent Cerro Grande Fire.

One of the emergency child-care units is operated by Texas Baptist Men of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the other by men’s ministries of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma.

Housing for the seven people who were coming with each unit would be provided by White Rock Baptist Church, Los Alamos, said Rose Kinsey, who with her husband, Fred, is an on-site coordinator of the Southern Baptist response to the emergency for the North American Mission Board. The Kinsey’s are stationed in Santa Fe.

One of the child-care units was to be stationed at the YMCA in Los Alamos and the other one would operate at the Los Alamos County Joint Service Center, Kinsey said.

The Southern Baptist volunteers expected to care for children whose parents or guardians would need to tend to other matters related to recovering from the fire, which consumed 260 homes in Los Alamos May 10-11.
