PHOENIX (BP)–Jim Wells, the Southern Baptist Convention’s registration secretary, will not be able to attend the annual meeting Tuesday and Wednesday due to a medical setback. His duties will be performed by John L. Yeats, the SBC’s recording secretary.
Wells, first elected as registration secretary in 2002, has been undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed in 2010 with a form of cancer, a sarcoma malignancy in his left hip muscle. He has responded well to the chemo, he has said in emails, but he developed an infection in recent days.
Neil Franks, lead pastor of First Baptist Church in Branson, Mo., told Baptist Press in an email Saturday he will still nominate Wells for re-election, saying it was a temporary setback in Wells’ recovery.
Wells is director of missions for the Tri County Baptist Association in Missouri.
