WMU employee, Joe Smith, 39, dies unexpectedly after surgery

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP)–Joe Smith, 39, design editor of Woman’s Missionary Union’s “Dimension” magazine, died unexpectedly Nov. 19 following quadruple bypass surgery Nov. 17. Smith had worked for WMU since October 1996.
On Nov. 12, Smith went to the doctor with chest pains and was hospitalized immediately. He had quadruple bypass surgery Nov. 17. He was stable initially, but went into cardiac arrest the morning of Nov. 19, and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Prior to working for WMU, he was on staff at Broadway Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas. He was a graduate of Samford University, Birmingham, Ala., and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, and two children, Jacob, 6, and Julie, 1. Other survivors include his father and two brothers. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or First Baptist Church, Columbiana, Ala.
