ATLANTA (BP)--Churches can make a difference in the AIDS epidemic through education and ministry, said Malcolm Marler, an AIDS chaplain and director of the Care Team Network in Birmingham, Ala.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP)--Leaders of the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League have declined an invitation to meet with Southern Baptist leaders to dialogue "in an atmosphere of mutual respect and honesty." The refusal came in a letter dated Feb. 18 to R. Philip Roberts, director of the Home Mission Board's interfaith witness department, and James Sibley, HMB national coordinator for Jewish ministries.

ATLANTA (BP)--Stating "our evangelistic efforts have largely neglected the Jewish people" and "we are indebted to the Jewish people, through whom we have received the Scriptures and our Savior, the Messiah of Israel," messengers to the 1996 Southern Baptist Convention resolved to "reaffirm that we are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ" and "direct our energies and resources toward the proclamation of the gospel to the Jewish people."

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP)--The number of Southern Baptists serving through Home Mission Board volunteer opportunities increased in 1996. An estimated 85,386 volunteers served in Christian ministries through the agency last year, a 5 percent hike from 1995.
