New Vision, Voices, Victories!

I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. And the Lord answered me, and said, "Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. […]

Statement by SBC Executive Committee President & CEO Morris H. Chapman

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Baptist Press released a story on July 3 about the funding cap imposed on giving to the SBC seminaries through the "BGCT 2001 Adopted Budget" giving option. The article's first paragraph inaccurately stated that "Texas Baptist churches who give money through the Baptist General Convention of Texas' 2001 Adopted Budget will no longer be able to forward money to Southern Baptist seminaries now that a BGCT-initiated funding cap has been imposed." Baptist Press has released a correction to clarify that while funds to SBC seminaries through the "BGCT 2001 Adopted Budget" giving option have been capped for this year, churches may continue to give to the seminaries through other giving options.

Chapman, president and chief executive officer, challenged the proposed plan for the Baptist General Convention of Texas to dramatically cut support for SBC seminaries and other SBC causes. He defended the Cooperative Program's effectiveness in advancing the gospel and concluded with the following […]

The reason, I have concluded, is […]

Local Church Autonomy

The principle of local church autonomy is one of the most cherished distinctives of ecclesiology among Southern Baptists today.

The Evangelical Nature of the Church

Evangelicalism Defined: Doctrine and Experience A necessary first step in any discussion of the evangelical nature of the church is to explain the meaning of the word evangelical. Evangelicals are defined both theologically and in terms of religious experience. These categories broadly approximate the Formal Principle, (sola scriptura) and Material Principle, (sola fide) of the […]

Evangelism is Driving Force of SBC Restructuring

At a recent conference of state evangelism directors, Morris H. Chapman spoke of the importance of evangelism, and how the Covenant for a New Century is fueled by the desire to reach the lost souls of the world. Evangelization is the priority of the SBC restructuring, not one of its priorities. The emphasis on evangelism […]
