LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- In light of challenges facing campuses about the place of women in those communities, R. Albert Mohler Jr. has appointed Garnetta Smith to the new position of women's support coordinator for Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In comments about Smith's appointment, Mohler said it further buttresses policies already in place to protect women by providing a woman in a place of authority to whom they have direct access. In his analysis of best practices, Mohler said, it became clear that Southern Seminary needed a woman in this role who had ...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- On the occasion of his 25th anniversary as Southern Baptist Theological Seminary's president, R. Albert Mohler Jr. sat down for a wide-ranging conversation about cultural challenges, theological education, the Southern Baptist Convention and his tenure as the ninth president of the SBC's oldest seminary. "When I came here as a student, I definitely came wanting to do a Ph.D. I wanted to be, and felt called to be, a theologian and a preacher of the Word," Mohler said. "I wanted to be deeply involved in apologetics. And I assumed that would be in the pastorate. But I knew that it ...

Old Testament’s viability for preaching underscored

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- When the apostles preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they used Old Testament texts. Preachers in the New Testament era possess the completed canon of Scripture, but that shouldn't mean they rely exclusively on the New Testament when preaching Christ, Philip Ryken stated during the 2018 E.Y. Mullins Lectures on Christian Preaching at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Sept. 26-27. Ryken, president of Wheaton College in Illinois, presented four lectures covering the foundations for and applications of preaching Jesus Christ from the Old Testament. The Mullins Lectures, named in honor of Southern Seminary's fourth president, represent one of the oldest endowed preaching lectureships in the United States, second only to Yale university's Lyman Beecher Lectureship on Preaching.

SBC called ‘force multiplier’ for local churches

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- The Southern Baptist Convention is a "force multiplier" for local churches, noted Mark Dever April 13 during a public conversation with R. Albert Mohler Jr. "I became an advocate for [my church] becoming more involved in the Southern Baptist Convention," Dever explained, "not out of a sense of tribal loyalty -- not that that's bad -- but because as a Gospel Christian who wants to see the Gospel taken to the ends of the earth, I think the SBC is a force multiplier."
