Bible Study: The adventure of walking by faith

NASHVILLE (BP) – This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with Lifeway Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, Lifeway publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Bible Studies For Life curriculum.

Bible Passages: Joshua 1:1-9, 16-18

Discussion Question:

  • How has God’s Word strengthened your faith?

Food for Thought by Nick Person:*

Joshua was an eyewitness to some of the most historic events of the exodus of the Hebrew nation from Egypt. He witnessed the impact of the 10 plagues on Pharaoh and Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, and Israel’s 40-year struggle in the wilderness. He watched the traveling nation’s prophet leader and judge, Moses. By example, Moses demonstrated what obedience to the Word of God looked like.

Moses was the conduit for God to deliver His commandments and lead the nation of Israel to walk out those commandments well. The foundation for Joshua to go and do likewise was beautifully laid.

Joshua 1 reminds us why we can be strong and courageous. The invitation to be strong and courageous isn’t built on the foundation of us and our deeds, but on the faithfulness and goodness of God.

We also have a roadmap for how to walk out faithfulness and obedience – the Word of God. The text challenges us to fix our eyes on God’s Word, align our hearts and feet with it, and walk in its truth. When we do, it leads us to the exact place God is inviting us to go. As we look at the life of Joshua, we can be encouraged by his faithfulness and allow it to fuel our faithfulness.
