Former Miss. editor Guy Henderson dies of heart bypass complications


TUPELO, Miss. (BP)–W. Guy Henderson, 73, editor emeritus of The Baptist Record, died March 7 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo from complications following heart bypass surgery. Services were March 9 at Morrison Heights Baptist Church in Clinton, with burial at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery in Clinton.

Henderson joined the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board in 1978 as a consultant in the stewardship department. In 1981, he was selected to serve as Mississippi Baptists’ director of evangelism, a post he held until his appointment as editor of The Baptist Record in 1990.

Henderson retired from MBCB in 1996 but remained active in Mississippi Baptist life as an interim pastor, supply preacher and speaker.

In 1958, Henderson and his wife, Lois, were appointed by the Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board) of the Southern Baptist Convention to serve as missionaries to South Korea, where they lived for 13 years. Following his time in South Korea, he served as pastor of the International Baptist Church in Manila, Philippines, for seven years.

Prior to his missionary service, Henderson pastored a number of churches in Mississippi and Texas.

He also was the author of four books, a U.S. Navy veteran and a retired chaplain for the U.S. Army Reserves.

Henderson was a graduate of Baptist-affiliated Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, Henderson is survived by a son, Rex Henderson of Webster, Mass.; three daughters, Melinda Kyzar of Moscow, Russia, Patricia Pardue of Terry, Miss., and Angela McWhirter of Tupelo, Miss.; and eight grandchildren.
